Join us in assisting Hurrican Harvey relief efforts! : The fallout from Hurricane Harvey is catastrophic.  37 people dead, upwards of 35,000 people in shelters and thousands of homes destroyed.  Those numbers all expected to rise as the rain moves out and the water eventually receeds.  People are in desperate need of help.

Route 98 in Franklin reopens for Labor Day Weekend : Oil City, PA –  Route 98 in Franklin Township, Erie County is reopened for the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Catholic Diocese holds emergency relief collection this weekend : Bishop Lawrence Persico is asking that a collection be taken for the victims of Hurricane Harvey at Masses throughout the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie this coming weekend, Sept. 2 and 3. Our brothers and sisters in the affected areas desperately need our prayerful and financial support.

More locals dedicate their time to Harvey relief : Local search and rescue teams are ready to go in case they are needed for relief efforts in Texas.  The Lake City Fire Company Water Search and Rescue Teams are one of the local groups telling the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency they are ready to help if needed in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

Harvey Update 08/31/2017 : Harvey is now blamed for at least 31 fatalities.  The storm may have destroyed up to 100,000 homes and relief efforts are sitll in full gear.

United Way 2-1-1 service helps with social services : A service helping people in need of assistance is now running 24/7.  PA 2-1-1 Northwest is an information and referral service connecting people who need social services.

Police and social media : The surveillance video that the Erie Police Department posted to their Facebook page led to the arrests of three teenagers accused of robbing a woman and choking her.  The EPD credits social media for helping them solve multiple crimes throughout the city.

Harvey Update 8/30/17 : With Harvey still presenting a deadly flood threat, Houston's Convention Center is now sheltering 10,000 people with more than 50 inches of rain having now fallen in some areas.  Floodwaters are still triggering water rescues and evacuations across hard-hit sections of the Gulf Coast region.

Peddle for Paws : Community members hopped aboard their bikes to help out their furry friends.   It's the first annual Peddle for Paws fundraiser.   Bicyclists gathered at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center and took off for a ride around the peninsula.   Proceeds from the event benefit the ANNA Shelter and the Humane Society.   ANNA Shelter pup Sadie got to cruise alongside the bikers.    The organizer said he hopes this is the first of many Peddle for Paws events.
