Updates to state compliance with Federal Real ID requirement

Updates to state compliance with Federal Real ID requirement: The State of Pennsylvania is getting one step closer to compliance with the Federal Real ID Act.   According to the Homeland Security website, 'Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.”   The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards.'   Identification must include the following information about the holder to be considered a REAL ID:    Full legal name Birthdate Gender Driver's license or ID card number Digital photograph of the ID holder Address of primary residence ID holder's signature Security features that prevent tampering, counterfeiting, or duplication. RFID chip or machine readable technology that can be used to pull up biographical or biometric data.   The Pennsylvania House today approved compromise legislation to fix the Real ID problem with state driver's licenses.  The amended bill will give Pennsylvanians the option of the Real ID license or the current standard issue type currently in use.  Those opting for the Real ID version will have to pay extra.   Governor Wolf has said he will sign the new bill, 'what it means is that in the meantime, you can use your driver's license to get into federal buildings, you can use your driver's license next year to get through TSA lines at the airport.'   The deadline for the Real ID system implementation is June 6th.  Governor Wolf says he plans on signing the bill tomorrow, in time for the June 6th deadline.   As far as Pennsylvania residents are concerned, thanks to an extension granted by Jay Johnson, the Secretary of Homeland Security, they have until October 2020 to comply.
