Hundreds walk in Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention event
Hundreds walk in Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention event: Hundreds of people walked to fight suicide at Presque Isle State Park. It's a walk many people said they wish they weren't a part of , but are thankful for the opportunity. The Out of the Darkness Walk to benefit suicide prevention drew in more than 250 people who in some way have been affected by suicide. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reports 44,000 people each year end their own lives in the United States. In Pennsylvania 5 people end their lives each day. Dawn Campbell, who walked the 3 miles for suicide prevention, knows all to well the the pain of losing a fried to suicide. It's really just touched my life and I want to just come out every year in memory of her and to support the cause, said Campbell at the walk with her daughters by her side. Others like, Erica Skinner, surrounded by a team of 30 of her family members and friends. The group walking in memory of Skinner's brother who took his own life 4 years ago. He just kind of had a rough time, and when he move back home, things kind of went downhill and he ended up committing suicide, said Skinner, emotional as she and her family and friends placed flowers in the pond to honor her brother. For me these kinds of things are ways to not only express my individual loss but also come together with family and of all our friends here too, and just show that support, Skinner said. Several suicide prevention organizations were on site inside of the Rotary Pavilion on the peninsula.
